On this Wednesday Microsoft confirmed in its Visual Studio blog that they are "in the early planning phrase of Visual Studio 2019 and Visual Studio for Mac", the next version of its integrated development environment (IDE). To make this release a simple and easy upgrade for everyone, Visual Studio 2019 previews will install side by side with Visual Studio 2017 and won't require a major operating system upgrade.

As for the release timing, the software giant said Visual Studio 2019 would be ready "in the coming months", and it is working to deliver Visual Studio 2019 quickly and interactively. The goal remains to make Visual Studio "faster, more reliable, more productive for individuals and teams, easier to use, and easier to get started with". Apart from that, it gives no more details like what new features will be included.

This news comes after Microsoft's acquisition of GitHub, the famous and largest platform to host open-source software projects. In the blog Microsoft also mentioned that the Developer Tools teams (especially .NET and Roslyn) do so much work in GitHub. We can speculate boldly that one of the highlights of Visual Studio 2019 might include the integration with or access to at least some services in GitHub.

Microsoft rolled out the Visual Studio 2017 in the March of that year and Visual Studio for Mac in May. After the initial release, the company also published several updates to help improve the performance of loading, building and unit test discovery. At its Build 2018 developers conference held last month, the company introduced two features in Visual Studio previews: IntelliCode to assist developers with artificial intelligence, and Live Share to enable real time collaboration.

In this March Microsoft launched the Visual Studio for Mac 7.4, which introduced new functionality like the support for Android Oreo 8.1 and macOS High Sierra, but primarily addressed reported issues like memory leaks and stability concerns.

What expectations do you have on the next version of Visual Studio?
